Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars #1 Facsimile Edition is a perfect way to celebrate the 40th anniversary of one of the most influential and epic comic book events of all time. Written by Jim Shooter and illustrated by Mike Zeck and John Beatty, this issue introduces the concept of the Beyonder, a godlike being who kidnaps the greatest heroes and villains of the Marvel Universe and pits them against each other on a mysterious planet called Battleworld. The stakes are high, the action is intense, and the surprises are endless.

This facsimile edition reproduces the original issue in its entirety and with a foil cover, including the ads and the letters page. It’s a treat for fans who want to relive the nostalgia of reading this comic for the first time, or for new readers who want to experience the classic story in its original form. The art by Zeck and Beatty is stunning, with vibrant colors and dynamic layouts that capture the scope and the drama of the story. The characters are drawn with personality and expression, and the costumes and designs are iconic. The cover by Zeck is one of the most memorable and eye-catching covers in comic book history, featuring a collage of heroes and villains ready for battle.

The story by Shooter is a masterclass in comic book storytelling, with a simple premise that allows for a lot of creativity and exploration. Shooter introduces the Beyonder as a mysterious and powerful force, who challenges the heroes and villains to fight for their hearts’ desire. He also sets up the conflicts and alliances among the characters, such as the rivalry between Doctor Doom and Galactus, the tension between the X-Men and the Avengers, and the attraction between Spider-Man and the Black Cat. Shooter also plants the seeds for some of the most important developments in Marvel history, such as the origin of Spider-Man’s black costume, the betrayal of the Thing, and the rise of the new Spider-Woman.

Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars holds a special place in my heart, dating back to 1984 when, at the age of 13, I picked up the first issue at my neighborhood LCS. Saturdays were eagerly anticipated, as they meant a trip to the comic shop with my parents. The allure of Secret Wars lies in its ensemble of so many iconic characters, both heroes and villains, forced to engage in epic battles in a mysterious land, showcasing their powers to the fullest. The crossover extended beyond the main series, weaving into the fabric of titles like The Amazing Spider-Man, The Avengers, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, The Thing, Fantastic Four, Marvel Team-Up, The Uncanny X-Men, and Thor.

Furthermore this series was fueled by a tie-in with an action figure toy line by Mattel. The excitement reached new heights when I stumbled upon a rack of Secret Wars action figures in a mall toy store. Among them, a Kang The Conqueror action figure stood out, capturing the essence of my all-time favorite Marvel Comics character. The memories of that era remain vivid and cherished.

Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars #1 Facsimile Edition is a must-have for any comic book fan, whether you’re a longtime reader or a newcomer. It’s a thrilling and fun adventure that showcases the best of the Marvel Universe, with a stellar creative team and a timeless story. Don’t miss out on picking this up!
