Cullen Bunn knows Deadpool, and “Venom War: Deadpool #1” brings back all the chaotic energy you’d expect when Wade Wilson gets tangled up with a horde of ravenous “zombiotes.” Yep, we’re talking zombies with symbiotes, and it’s exactly as crazy as it sounds.

The story kicks off with Deadpool knee-deep in a situation where he’s outnumbered by goo-covered, flesh-eating fiends. His signature wit and unfiltered nonsense are in full force here, and that’s what keeps it fun. You’ve got Deadpool doing what he does best—cracking jokes in the face of what should be certain death—but, of course, nothing can keep him down for long.

What got me invested was seeing Deadpool revisit the Monster Underworld. It’s been a while since his divorce from Shiklah, and fans of that era are going to appreciate the callbacks. It feels like Deadpool’s always had a special place among monsters, and seeing him navigate that realm again is like revisiting old friends—freakish, terrifying friends, but friends nonetheless. It also raises the question of whether we might see Shiklah show up later in this storyline, and that’s a pretty intriguing thought.

Another reason I had to pick this up? The “Venom War” arc is in full swing, and keeping up with it has been a wild ride. Venom, symbiotes, and now the introduction of Deadpool into the mix—it’s almost guaranteed mayhem. And Bunn’s love for the Legion of Monsters? That’s just icing on the cake.

With Roberto Di Salvo’s art perfectly capturing the madness and Giuseppe Camuncoli’s cover demanding your attention, “Venom War: Deadpool #1” is exactly what you’d expect from a story where Deadpool faces off against a plague of zombiotes. It’s chaotic, it’s unpredictable, and it’s loaded with all the monstrous mayhem you could want. This issue delivers the kind of off-the-wall, fast-paced action that makes Deadpool so much fun.
