LAST VENOM STANDING! The Venom Symbiote has bonded with both Eddie Brock and his son Dylan at different points. Now both Brocks are going head-to-head, determined to be the one, true Venom! Father versus son in a showdown of showdowns that threatens to tear the world asunder! From heavyweight talent champions Al Ewing and Iban Coello comes a Battle for the ‘Biote like you’ve never seen!

Marvel Comics’ latest offering, “Venom War #1,” penned by Al Ewing and brought to life by Iban Coello’s illustrations, presents a unique premise that pits father against son in a symbiotic struggle for supremacy. The narrative thrust of this issue is rooted in the familial conflict between Eddie Brock and his son Dylan, each vying to be the definitive host for the Venom symbiote.

The issue takes an unexpected turn by setting much of the action within a WWE wrestling ring, a creative choice that may divide fans. On one hand, it provides a fresh backdrop for the characters’ conflict, deviating from the typical urban chaos often associated with Venom stories. On the other hand, some readers might find this setting a departure from the high-stakes drama they’ve come to expect from a Venom title.

Ewing’s writing maintains a steady pace, though it doesn’t quite reach the seismic impact that might be anticipated from a series opener. The dialogue is serviceable, capturing the essence of the characters without venturing into new territory. Coello’s art, however, stands out, with dynamic panels that capture the intensity of the wrestling matches and the inner turmoil of the characters.

The promise of a showdown between the Brocks and Spider-Man injects a dose of excitement into the series, hinting at a climactic battle that could potentially elevate the storyline in future issues. The reconnection between Peter Parker and the symbiote adds a layer of complexity to the narrative, suggesting that past relationships will play a significant role in the unfolding drama.

“Venom War #1” is a competent entry that lays the groundwork for what could be a compelling arc. It doesn’t quite hit the mark of being essential reading, but for fans invested in the Venom mythos, it offers enough to keep the pages turning. Whether it will be remembered as a pivotal chapter in the Venom saga remains to be seen, but it certainly sets the stage for an intriguing battle ahead. This is the first issue in a five issue mini-series.

“Venom War #1” is available on our new comic book wall and can also be placed on your weekly pull list.
