A GIANT-SIZE THOR SPECTACULAR — GUEST-STARRING HERCULES! Thor All-Father and Hercules, God of Heroes, had joined forces many times, as fast friends and fierce rivals… but never before like this. For in the farthest reaches of space, the Deific Duo faced the greatest and most terrifying war machine ever created… and it bore the Thunderer’s face. This is the story… of the GIANT-SIZE THOR! ALSO: Reprinting Bob Harras and Jackson Guice’s THOR #365 — a Thor and Hercules tale told by the only real authority on such things: Hercules himself!
When I cracked open Giant-Size Thor #1, I knew Al Ewing was going to give us something special, but I didn’t expect him to take “giant-size” quite so literally. Yet, here we are with a colossal Thor mech stomping through the farthest reaches of space, and you know what? I’m here for it.
The issue kicks off with Thor, who is now the All-Father and the God of Thunder, teaming up with Hercules, the God of Heroes. Their dynamic is always a mix of camaraderie and rivalry, and that chemistry is on full display here. But when a giant war machine sporting Thor’s own likeness shows up, things get interesting fast. The sheer scale of this battle is mind-boggling, and it’s as over-the-top as it sounds. Brian Level’s art captures the massive scope of these cosmic titans, while Bryan Hitch’s cover gives you a taste of the epicness inside.
And yes, the literal giant-size Thor mech is awesome. Sure, it’s unexpected, but it’s also perfect for a book like this. I love giant robots, but I didn’t think I needed a giant robot Thor—turns out, I did. Ewing’s knack for balancing the absurd with the epic is what makes this work. Thor is captured, Hercules is furious, yet still manages to be the godliest of gentlemen, and the action is just plain fun.
Plus, the bonus reprint of Thor #365 by Bob Harras and Jackson Guice is a nice touch, offering a classic tale of Thor and Hercules straight from the mouth of the mythic demigod himself.
If you’re looking for a wild ride with the gods of Marvel, Giant-Size Thor #1 delivers. It’s big, it’s bold, and it’s got a massive Thor mech smashing through the cosmos. What more could you want?
