BATMAN LEGEND SCOTT SNYDER AND ICONIC ARTIST NICK DRAGOTTA TRANSFORM THE DARK KNIGHT’S TALE FOR THE MODERN AGE! Without the mansion… without the money… without the butler… what’s left is the Absolute Dark Knight!

I finally got around to reading Absolute Batman #1, and wow—what a ride! I would’ve gotten to it sooner, but Hurricane Milton decided to throw a wrench in those plans. So, I’m bringing you quadruple the reviews this week to make up for it.

Let’s talk about this book. Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta are at the helm, and they’ve created something really unique here. It’s Batman, but not in the way you’d expect. No mansion, no billions, and no Alfred. It strips Bruce Wayne down to his core, making him this buff, working-class hero who still somehow manages to outsmart and out-muscle his way through life.

Dragotta’s artwork really shines in this issue. There’s a noticeable change in the tone when the story dips into flashbacks—they’re brighter, which gives those sections a distinct feel compared to the darker present-day narrative. It’s a small detail, but it really adds to the storytelling. The way Bruce is portrayed physically is also a big shift. He’s ridiculously strong, like someone who’s had to scrap his way to survival rather than rely on fancy tech or a cushy upbringing.

This is basically an Elseworlds story, so the stakes feel different. I’m not entirely sure how ambitious this series is aiming to be in terms of scope, but what I can say is that this version of Batman works. The backstory is gradually revealed in a way that doesn’t feel forced—it’s woven into the narrative with enough tension to keep you hooked.

The buzz around this book was huge, and honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I had so many thoughts swirling around that it took me a while to even process it. I mean, I didn’t even get to it on time because of that dumb hurricane. But once I did, it really delivered. Also, fun fact: my shop sold out of it as soon as we opened back up after the storm!

If you haven’t grabbed a copy yet, good luck finding one—it’s flying off the shelves. This first issue really sets the tone for what’s shaping up to be an exciting, gritty Batman saga. I know that we have already reordered the 2nd print and it should be available by October 30th.
